Because of limited funding and resources in our district, student textbooks are extremely old and falling apart. In fact, many are 15-20 years old. After speaking with administrators at the end of the school year, they determined there would not be enough room in the budget to get us new books, but with the condition of the current ones, we cannot continue to use them. Using novels in the foreign language classes allow me to build exciting and engaging units that spark the interest of students and increase proficiency as well as support literacy in their first language. They also allow students to connect with the culture and be innovative with projects and extension activities. The House on Mango Street and Berto and his Good Ideas are two great books that I can use in two different levels in my goal to recreate the curriculum for my students.
