I work in a school that is over 30 years old and is home to many diverse students. Our school currently houses over 2,500 students. Our students are focused and have dreams bigger than we did in high school in the learning process. In order to compete in a global environment where students speak two or three languages, students need to be able to read, speak, understand and write in a second or third language. Particularly in California where there are so many Spanish-speakers, students need to interact with heritage speakers and apply for jobs that are bilingual. In addition, students who travel to other countries will be able to communicate in Spanish with natives and their experience is more enriching when they can converse and comprehend others.
