Although my students are lucky enough to live right near the Pacific Ocean, many have never even been to the beach before. My students come from very diverse, working class families, and so their life experiences are oftentimes lacking. In addition, we are considered a "high poverty" school. Our teachers work hard to fill in those gaps and support student learning. Several of my kiddos came to me reading substantially below grade level and are still mastering English. We are under new leadership after several years of instability and we are making a big push to restructure our school model. Last year the students received Chromebooks to use at school and it has completely changed the way we are able to approach teaching and learning. Our school focus is on showing PRIDE: perseverance, respect/responsibility, integrity, duty, and enthusiasm, as well as developing scholarly habits that support lifelong learning.
