In an effort to engage our student population, several extracurricular activities have been implemented this year; all are student lead clubs sponsored and funded by teachers/staff. The most popular addition to the line-up has been the drama club. In order to participate in club activities, students must maintain passing grades and remain on-pace in their classes. This has provided a much-needed incentive for drama club kids to prioritize academics and utilize effective study habits after COVID disrupted lives and stunted academic progress. Additionally, drama club provides opportunity for students to exercise their creativity, collaborate with their peers, and it serves as a welcome reprieve from the rigors of the classroom. Our school operates out of a 1953 building designed for elementary age students; there is a stage for our kids on which our students can perform, but no sound system. Despite the lack of modern performance technology, the drama club kids were innovative in creating a well-thought out and designed set for our first ever production: the Holiday Showcase. We made do with borrowed equipment and donated supplies, and the kids put on a show that culminated in a standing ovation from a parent population that were more than excited to attend a school function for the first time in two years. The pride felt by the kids performing (all but one of them a first-timer!), as well as the kids who seamlessly operated as the stage crew was palpable. Several of them stated that for the first time since COVID, school felt normal. As we look towards our spring production (a full-length play accompanied by several standards-based writing and research assignments along the way to performance day) and many others to follow, a new sound system would be integral to the success of the students' efforts.
