The materials I am requesting will benefit not just the students in my classroom, but students throughout the school who struggle with sensory issues. Autism, Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD are some major causes of students to struggle with the need to keep their hands busy, or have some way to help them cope with the stress they feel. Using Theraputty, stretchy animals and textured sensory balls are a great way to help students calm themselves. I have watched students come into my room feeling frustrated, angry and stressed out; after just by pulling and stretching putty, they are able to regulate their feelings. Giving students options of various sensory tools will teach them a variety of ways to deal with the stress they feel. It can range from the previously mentioned stretching movements, to simply holding a weighted item. Today's students have so many more "things" to learn other than the traditional academics. I personally think it is imperative to make sure that we do all we can to foster those coping skills.
