My AVID students come from a diverse variety of backgrounds. However, to truly be a culturally relevant classroom, we need novels in our classroom library that students can relate to. We are seeking funding to add culturally relevant titles to our classroom. With the help of the funding of these novels, we will engage students who are college-bound by offering them characters they can see themselves in. Students will utilize these novels to hold Socratic Seminars and Philosophical Chairs, work on critical thinking skills, and bolster their close reading skills, amongst other AVID strategies. These titles are lauded as excellent novels for student engagement.
