We are all too familiar with the struggles of being an active reader and having the ants in the pants as a child. All we wanted was to be somewhere else if we had to read. How could we imagine being a princess in a castle and eating a royal meal when we were just at a plain, old school desk? How could we sail the ocean sea by sitting uncomfortably on a school chair?
Having a choice is everything, whether it be deciding a location to read or how comfortable you’re willing to get to put your heart into reading.
In my project, I am requesting coziness, and a flexibility that would not only help them read effectively, but put the enjoyment back into a good book. I think multiple seating choices from flexible chairs to comfortable pillows will give them the opportunity to be able to dive into the books of their choosing and explore its world using the freedom of choice that they will gain from this project. I want my students to have more access to books that are relevant to their lives as well as enjoyable fiction books that can take them out of their own world for a little while. These resources will be utilized primarily during reading time, but the hope is that this can become a free time activity that all students look forward to. By utilizing these resources during the school day, students will have opportunities to explore different kinds of seating arrangements that work best for them during independent and partner reading and eventually in their free time.
