Students will engage in a unit of study that taps into social studies and language arts. We will read narrative accounts from Peace Corps and the Red Cross volunteers about their experiences trying to implement solutions to the problem in Sudan. After building our background knowledge by reading a variety of nonfiction texts, we will read "A Long Walk to Water." Reading this book will allow students to empathize with real people and really understand the effects of the life of refugees. This book will also allow us to study the conflict in Sudan and its effect on so many young boys and their families while relating it to current issues and problems that exist in our world today.
