Smiles make the whole world brighter. In the age of COVID-19, smiles are rare to find; face masks hide flashes of bright white teeth, giggles, and rare grins from ear to ear. According to a study published by Dr. Mehrabian, 93% of communication is nonverbal; thus, body language and facial expressions convey more information than actual verbal communication. As a teacher, I need to be an expert communicator, teaching kids knowledge and skills to help them throughout their life. During COVID-19, students lost significant instruction time due to virtual learning. The lack of a physical space caused communication and content retention to drastically decrease. My special education students suffered even more so than traditional students, due to the loss of in-person instruction. While the hybrid model is helpful, it still cuts in-person instruction in half. Teachers need to utilize every single tool and strategy possible to help students learn. Face shields would help with teacher-student relationships because it fosters better communication, provides comfort and safety, builds positive relationships, and creates a sense of community--even while social distancing. Face shields allow students to see people's emotions and strengthen our learning community before we inevitably switch to online learning.
