I work with students in 3rd-5th grade who receive Special Education Services. They are typically 90% African American and most of them come from low-income families. My students predominately have learning disabilities and/or behavior/attention disabilities. I provide academic and behavioral support for my students throughout the day. I have pull-out math, reading, and social skills groups and I enjoy when I am able to co-teach with my general education colleagues. My classroom is often a place of respite and self-reflection for my students who often have a difficult time self-regulating their emotions and behaviors in the larger general education setting. I strive to create a space that is calming, comfortable, and generally a safe place for students to be themselves and learn skills to help them thrive as growing children in our community.
