Children of Blood and Bone is a young adult, award-winning book and is just what my students need to hook them into reading! It tells the story of a young, black girl who is compelled to stand up against a dictator that is killing her people, by reclaiming her magic. This book is powerful, riveting, and creates a space to have empathetic conversations about injustices in our society. I know my students will engage with all the topics that are raised in the book; racial injustice, police brutality, gun violence, economic inequities, Black Lives Matter, and more. These themes are presented in a fictional setting, that makes it accessible to students. I can't wait for the powerful conversations we can have as we grapple with all of the complexities that our American society presents and that this book shines a light on and contrast fiction with their real-life experiences. I know that this book can turn them into avid readers and see books as exciting ways to learn about themselves, our communities, and the world.
