Each day our students enter through the doors of our elementary school, they come with smiles and dreams. Our teachers and staff all believe a great educational experience begins with positive relationships and opportunities. Our principal, Mr. T. has led students and all staff members to come with a common purpose; to be kind to each other and to have the highest expectations for themselves. He has led our team of teachers to do the same. You will always see our teachers checking up on and encouraging every child during the day. You will also see everyone at our elementary school searching for the best ways to help students succeed. One of my recent projects has been researching new ways to teach struggling readers how to be successful and confident readers. Recently, I have discovered a more systematic and explicit way to help students learn how to read. There is an incredible amount of resources being shared by researchers and educators that can be implemented in classrooms. However, I do not have one of the most important pieces to the puzzle to support this type of phonics instruction. Having only a small amount of decodable readers available for my students to read makes it difficult to complete the total process. I have been using a new structured framework to teach students how to read, yet I have to scramble to find the decodable readers to connect my instruction to practice opportunities with real books. Having enough books that follow a specific sequence of letters and letter patterns for ALL of my students in my reading groups will help them practice and become successful at decoding text. These skills will lead them to be more automatic and help them to concentrate more on the comprehension and learning part of reading.
