Paper quilling will give my students a tactile lesson in art history, science, geometry, symmetry, and modern art. The art of paper quilling began long ago in the 15th century as a decorative art and has evolved several times since. Modern artists utilize paper quilling to create everything from greeting cards to detailed portraits. My students will create colorful paper quilled beetles. They will learn and build the 7 parts of a beetle. Students will then name their new species of beetle and create a scientific drawing of it. Having access to a large variety of art mediums keeps students engaged and excited to learn. Rolling strips of paper into quills will build fine motor skills, pinching them into shapes will reinforce knowledge of geometry, and making both sides of their beetle match in shape, as well as color, will teach symmetry while expanding their exploration of artistic materials and practices.
