Did you know that you learn new vocabulary words faster when you are having fun? Many of my students only have opportunities for reading and story time at school, so it is important for them to have access to these great books that help them build rich background knowledge. They also beg for new Pigeon and Pete the Cat stories! Having a diverse and intriguing library helps ensure that there is a book that will entice every student. Research supports that demonstrating the value of both languages for bilingual students boosts their language and literacy skills as well as their self esteem. Language supports literacy and literacy facilitates language learning. Reading with students helps them to hear and see a wider range of words that boosts their vocabulary.
