I am a special education teacher that follows a "push-in" model. I collaborate with the general education teacher and teach specialized instruction in my students' general education classroom. Our focus is to ensure students are receiving full access to the general education curriculum while limiting any disruption to their daily schedule (such as pulling students out of a classroom). This includes the implementation of specially designed modifications within the general classroom setting. Often, I am limited by what I can transport into my students classroom.
I am asking for two 6-drawer carts equipped with sturdy wheels that will make moving manipulatives from classroom to classroom easier. These carts will ensure I have materials and manipulatives at hand to differentiate instruction for those students who are having difficulty understanding a concept.
Manipulatives are concrete objects that students can use to develop a conceptual understanding of a topic or skill. For my project, I also plan to attach magnetic white boards onto both sides of the carts which will be used with magnetic manipulatives. In addition, magnetic alphabet letter manipulatives for my pre-readers to use and arrange as they learn word attack skills and Rekenreks (arithmetic racks which help student develop number sense) will complete my project.
Students are shown to make the highest gains when manipulatives are a significant part of the curriculum and are a great way to reach tactile and visual learners. These requested items will assist me in making learning fun while improving my students performance,.
