Copies of this poignant book will help my 9th-grade students (and possibly the other 9th graders if my colleagues would like to share the class set) explore social justice issues. In addition, it will pair nicely with To Kill a Mockingbird, serving to highlight the relevance of a fictional work. This book will be read in conjunction with TKaM and become a part of our 9th grade "Searching for Justice" unit, where we explore themes surrounding social issues, racism, and courage. The author, Bryan Stevenson is the real-life Atticus, standing up for the falsely accused. The book is incredibly informative, explaining how our criminal justice system works. Picasso once said, "Art is a lie that tells the truth." By pairing the nonfiction work (truth)--Just Mercy--with fiction (art)--To Kill a Mockingbird--students can see the significance in Picasso's saying.
