For our novel unit this year, I would like to have the students in one of my classes read The Giver. This novel is recommended material for our grade level and I believe they will benefit greatly from studying it. The Giver is a book with a lot to dissect. The ending is essentially left up to the reader, and I am trying to encourage independent thought and open interpretation. My students will learn new vocabulary words, new ways of thinking, and they will have healthy debates and open discussion about the material.
