Our school has special focus on economics as a curriculum. Students attend economics class once a week beginning in kindergarten. Our students learn factors that determine the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Every year our 5th graders take an end of the year trip to the Federal Reserve in Kansas City, Missouri. The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City covers the 10th District of the Federal Reserve, which includes Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Wyoming, and portions of western Missouri and northern New Mexico. The Kansas City branch is second only to the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco in size of geographic area served. Students have been studying economics all year and as a 5th grade team we come up with several fund raisers to be able to send our 80 plus students on this trip. With 98% our students’ families qualifying for free or reduced lunch, the chances of asking families to pay for their students’ trip are slim to none. While in Kansas City we will also visit Science City. Science City is a place of wonder, where students can emerge themselves straight into STEM. Throw the don't touch mindset out the window. There are no tests and no wrong or right answers, just a chance to explore with freedom and pure imagination. Its magic starts with its location. An architectural and historic marvel, Union Station provides a venue unlike any other science center in the nation. From the moment you pass under the clock tower to your first step inside the cityscape of Science City, the experience sets the stage for making memories. Science City will help us meet a multitude of national and state curriculum guidelines.
