One of the most challenging units to teach, but also a favorite of the students is PROTISTS. This kingdom is full of one-celled organisms that just don't seem to fit in...no wonder middle school children connect with these misfit creatures deeply. Live specimens truly bring learning to life as students observe amoebas, parameciums, euglenas, and volvox under the microscope. Seeing the "wee beasties", as early scientist Anton van Leeuwenhoek called them, move and feed brings a new level of understanding that pictures in a book cannot. No words can express the excitement in their voices as students turn the focus knobs and bring into focus the organisms they have been only reading and hearing about - it is a memory that will be with them for a lifetime!
