Depression and anxiety had increased by 65% among urban youth since 2013. I would like to use these books to build the social emotional learning with our 7th girls and to also give them the opportunity to have a safe space to address their problems and come up with solutions. This year alone we have had 10 out of our 15 7th graders hospitalized due to mental health needs. Meeting with the girls weekly for 30-45 minutes a day and giving them the necessary tools to be empowered and encouraged will make a great impact. These students would have better grades and have better self-esteem. Showing them ways to combat their depression and anxiety will decrease the number of mental health calls and allow them to be in school more to receive a continuous education. Learning to share their story and learning to change their way of thinking will impact not only their grades but their lives as well. These books will guide us through our workshops and help us provide these young ladies with the necessary coping skills and strategies to overcome their depression and anxiety.
