My students attend a suburban public high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. They are freshmen in high school who are enrolling in Spanish I and II classes in order to pursue a college-preparatory diploma in order to graduate high school. Many of my students come into the class with somewhat jaded views of language-learning because they think it is hard to learn a language, because they may have had a previous negative experience, or because they have trouble connecting the language to a real-life need for knowing Spanish. My challenge and my goal each year is to show each student how learning Spanish can be fun, interesting, engaging, and enlightening. My hope is that by the time they finish my class, they will have had a positive experience learning Spanish, that they will find a real-life application for using Spanish, that they see themselves as just a small part of the diverse world in which we live, and that they learn to interact with the world outside their back doors.
