We are an inner city school where most of the students receive free breakfast and lunch. Most of them come to us not speaking English as their primary language. The students also do not have many books at home, or parents who can read to them. My students have slowly started to be exposed to grade level literature but are not confident in their reading. They get caught up on a word they do not know, and just give up with reading. If I have a books on tape my children can enjoy books without getting caught up on a word. This will boost their confidence and their love for reading.
