Students don't want to do the same thing everyday in class. They need a variety of activities to keep them engaged and to interact with the content. One thing we can do as educators is to provide them not just gamification, but something that will get their critical thinking muscles stretching. Students need to break out of the mundane sit in their desk types of classrooms and they need to work their minds in different ways. Escape rooms are incredibly popular amongst our students(there are new ones popping up like store fronts; movies are being made that are based off of them; and they are becoming more and more mainstream). I plan on using the novelty of an escape room to help engage my students to get them focused on what we are doing in class. I will hide prizes in the tackle boxes; use the invisible ink to write messages that they will be able to find with UV flashlights; have multiple locks for them to get past; and they will have to work together in order to be successful. This project will incorporate two of the most important aspects of student success: collaboration and critical thinking.
