A kidney-shaped table will help promote an atmosphere that fosters learning with the use of smaller-group instruction. My class serves twelve students in 9th-12th grade that range in different levels both academically and socially. We are unable to meet all of the students’ needs in whole-group instruction and need the ability to work with students both one-on-one and in small groups. Small learning groups have been shown by research to be effective for teaching reading and mathematics to students with learning disabilities. Currently, we have been putting desks together to create a table and crowding students around another small rectangular table. This has made transitioning from whole group instruction to group work difficult and provides distractions for my students with attention deficit needs. My hope is to provide a comfortable setting to work with students during academic lessons.
