Thankfully, the middle school mathematics room in my school is one of the larger rooms, but the space is extremely confined to the amount of seating options there are (mostly individual desks and chairs grouped together). We typically work in centers or learning pods that travel around focusing on different skills within a singular topic and the students get really excited when they get to the two whiteboard tables I have (tables that you can write on). The students are so excited for a different seating arrangements and the work they produce at that center is vastly superior to the work they do at other centers, so why not give each center a different look? The couch and pillows for our brain break and social-emotional learning center, the high-top stools for the project based center, and the colored stools for creating groups and easy stacking and storage for more fluid movements will all be integral parts in creating a dynamic, fun, and cognitively engaging learning environment.
