My students are first, second, and third graders who are learning English as a second language. These thirty kiddos are working hard to learn to read, write, speak, and listen in English while mostly speaking other languages at home. They attend a large public school in the state of Minnesota. The number of English language learners attending the school has increased dramatically over the past five years and the school's teachers and administrators are working hard, and making changes, to provide them with the highest quality instruction. While a number of my students are learning to read and write in their first languages during evenings and weekends, many come to school with little exposure to literature in any language. For those students that haven't yet experienced the power of the written word when they first walk through our doors, the first few years of school are a critical time to get them engaged and excited about the learning process.
