When students have to stop and stand in line to sharpen a pencil every time it goes dull while creating a colored pencil work, it breaks their creative flow. Having pencil sharpeners at every table would allow students to make the most of their class time and continue their artworks with minimal distractions and interruptions. Carl Angels are the best for lead pencils because they are quiet and do not allow oversharpening. That means that other students will not be disturbed by the motor of an electric sharpener, and pencils will last longer. Electric sharpeners can often "eat" pencils. Alvin Brass sharpeners are great for colored pencils because they have a sharp stainless steel blade that can be replaced. Dull blades are often the cause of breakage with colored pencils. Breakage causes the pencil to have to sharpened over and over wasting materials. I teach at a Title I school where over 70% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. They simply do not have the funds to purchase their own art supplies meaning that the school has to fund all supplies for the art classroom. In an effort to do more with less, I believe that having these sharpeners would help my students.
