"Mr. H, can you turn the lights off?" One of the most frequent requests I hear from my students when I'm teaching from the Promethean board is that I turn the lights off. The Promethean boards at my school are aging, but even with their updated projectors they're often hard to read--even when the classroom's overhead lights are at their lowest setting. So the students' request that the lights be off seems reasonable. However, students are much more prone to mischief in a room that's overly dark. Turning the lights completely off isn't an option. I'd like to provide my students with lighting that doesn't obscure the board, yet still gives them ample illumination to see their notes and books. My solution is one that many other teachers have adopted. I'd like to place floor lamps at each corner of the classroom. These lamps will provide softer lighting than the overhead lights, improving my students' learning atmosphere. I'm all for students taking good organized notes, but that endeavor requires both that their lighting be adequate and that they have something to write with. Another frequent request I hear from my students is, "Do you have a pencil I can borrow?" Having a supply of pencils on hand is vital for the odd moments when students genuinely lack a writing instrument.
