We need diverse books! These books will expose our students to a wide and rich variety of characters. Children interact with other students throughout their day but never truly learn about another culture. Reading literature about the world around them is a great way to close that gap. Books help children understand how their culture is perceived as well as the culture of their friends. This project will create an environment that helps children develop a positive sense of self and explore the people around them. Self-identity is influenced by the way society views that child’s cultural affiliation. It is also influenced by the lack of representation in books and stories. This is problematic for all students. It sends the message that they aren’t important or valued.
