Our classroom is a neighborhood, public school. It is somewhat geographically separate from the rest of our town. Within walking/biking distance, there is only a convenience store and a couple of churches. Over 80% qualify for free or reduced lunch. Just under a third of the students in my class have computers in their home or the home of a nearby friend or relative. Several have developmental concerns, four in this group are on IEPs. Several have one or both parents out of their lives by choice or due to incarceration. All of them are curious and observant and all of them have the potential to become analytical thinkers. Sadly, in August I heard from one student, "I can't do that, I'm dumb just like my sister." This is a perception that I cannot accept from a perfectly bright child at the age of five! These kids need authentic ways to encourage them to think, to view themselves as smart, and to communicate with me and classmates.
