It is our job, as educators, to incite discussion around relatable experiences for our students. It is our job to make reading interesting and to find texts that invite students to keep reading. It is our job to create space to allow students to think critically in order to become the change agents we need to lead the future. Students need a book that is relevant, gripping, and one that will incite positive and progressive dialogue around topics they can relate to: police brutality, bystander effects, reputation, and mental trauma. Students need current books by Black authors so that they see themselves- not only in successful, published voices, but also to elevate their own voices about issues that matter.
