I am the teacher of a lively group of 5th graders at a public school in a large, urban school district. Many of them are English language learners in homes where parents do not speak English. Over 50% qualify for free and/or reduced school breakfast and lunch. These young readers, writers, scientists, techies, engineers, and mathematicians are inquisitive, energetic, and creative, and they get excited about STEAM education. Because 5th graders tend to be particularly social, our day is structured to provide lots of partner and group interaction. In the classroom, we use manipulatives and games frequently to learn, and students are encouraged to ask questions, be problem solvers, and explain their thinking.
