My students have not had the positive experiences with reading that many had growing up. In my Intensive Reading 11th and 12th grade classes it's a struggle to get them to pick up a book at the beginning of the year. They are placed in my class due to low performance on our state reading exam, and because of this they are in danger of not graduating high school. Reading is their downfall and many have no one at home encouraging them to pick up a book so the only practice they are getting is their hour with me every day. Many come from low income households where there is little parental involvement as well. It is amazing, however, to see their attitudes change the first time I introduce them to a high interest book and to hear them actually ask me for more reading time. I even see them talking about their books with the other students, thus even further spreading the joy of reading. Then, this positive experi
