I serve students in a culturally and socioeconomically diverse area of New Hampshire. Due to this it is nearly never safe to assume that all have equal access to or experience with reading, writing, or creating outside of what they encounter in school. Their minds are infinitely unique and powerful, yet sometimes they are reluctant to open up to their potential. When exposed to various ways to communicate understanding, the flood gates open and the ideas burst forth! My district suffers from cuts just like most others around the country and unfortunately many opportunities to make connections outside of texts read in class are limited. Limiting these hard but bright minds might kill creativity, motivation, and inspiration altogether. If that happens, their overall excitability and zest for school life might dissipate as well.
