These books will give my students the opportunity to read books that appeal to them but are not beyond their current reading abilities. Many of the books that have middle school characters and themes have a reading level that is too high for my Dyslexia students in their first year of therapy, and they don't want to read books at their reading level because many of those have themes that appeal to young elementary readers. To build their confidence in reading while still capturing their attention and leaving them hungry for more, my students need these hi-lo books for our classroom. The books I've chosen also have important character-building themes. The students will read about characters who have the same kinds of problems they face each day and how they overcome those problems with kindness, integrity, ingenuity, and empathy. Not only will my students become confident readers, they will also become more aware of social emotional concepts that will stick with them throughout their lives.
