Durham Public Schools has mandated that all students eat outside starting next week. I don't have more than 12 students in my room at a time, but I have had many who have been absent because of contact tracing or quarantine already. Even with smaller class sizes, teachers are struggling to make sure students stay masked, distanced, and sanitized at all times. I tried to think of a creative way to allow us to continue our seminar style seating, but do it outdoors. The data shows that being outdoors helps prevent the spread of COVID-19 and any other "bugs" that plague places such as schools--especially during the colder months. The great thing about camping chairs is that we can move them to different places around the school's campus. In the winter we can go in the direct sunlight and during warmer days we can find a shady place. They are compact, easily sprayed with disinfectant, and comfortable. The clipboards would be helpful for students to have a designated hard surface to use during writing. This project would allow students to move beyond the fluorescent lighting of a traditional classroom too. Which is a mental health booster! We need sunlight! We are reading Jason Reynolds "Look Both Ways" and it would be amazing to be safely spread out and be comfortable. Even with the cooler temperatures coming, these chairs can be used throughout most of the year in North Carolina. Thank you so much for helping us learn outdoors!
