My students are talented and shaped by their experiences. Many take-on extra responsibilities to help their families. There's the motherly big sister who looks after her three younger siblings so Mom can go back to school. We have the young-man with the infectious grin who starts his school day at 6:45 a.m. and goes to his after-school program until 6 p.m. He endures such a long day, so Mom can "work to make a better life for me and my sister." He understands what it means to work hard for what you want. Many express themselves through performing arts and design. There's the determined triple-threat who's auditioned to compete on America's Got Talent and American Idol, the aspiring artist who won first place in costume design at our local comic-on, and the young concert pianist who spends her weekends traveling to local competitions. My students are amazing kids with incredibly mature insights and observations. They're curious, humorous and deserving of every possible opportunity!
