My students live in an urban environment. They are constantly berated and barraged by news stories depicting their neighborhoods as war zones. Though they come from low income communities, they are determined to show the world the beauty and diversity of their homes and backgrounds. My students have a vested interest in their community and school and would like begin creating media pieces that reflect their personal experiences and opinions. As a public high school dedicated to educating one student at a time, we want foster their drive to tell their own stories. Our school is small with small class sizes so that each student receives the attention they need and deserve. Unfortunately, as is the case in most public school settings, our budget leaves our class wanting of many material resources needed to complete such a large undertaking.
