Often English Language Arts classes target reading selections that students will read with the assistance of the teacher. Understanding is increased with the help of class discussions and supplemental activities that guide students to comprehension. The challenges of teaching reading skills and strategies during COVID-19 often require the removal of scaffolds and supports earlier than necessary. Without these, struggling readers lose opportunities for reteaching and practice they'd normally receive in the classroom. The purpose of this project is to obtain reading selections written in contemporary, Standard American English that may be more easily accessible to students who are reading alone or without the support of another skilled reader. Additionally, the subject matter of each text has been identified as that which will more widely engage the interests of students at SA. We have chosen topics that range from video games to science to history with the hope that texts focused on students' preferred topics will hold their attention more deeply and for longer periods of time.
