In my classroom, students develop a love for reading by learning to enjoy and apply this life-skill throughout the day, and in all situations! Students love to snuggle up with books in our silent reading center, where they can get comfortable on the carpet, on pillows, or in comfy bean bags chairs. They love the peacefulness of our Sustained Silent Reading (SSR) periods, during which they find out what it means to "get lost in a book." Buddy reading, which allows students of varying levels to share books, and to support one another, is another class favorite. The majority of my class is made up of children of color, 40-50% of whom are English Language Learners. They are mostly from working or lower middle class families, with limited community experiences. We function as a community of learners in an extended family atmosphere, in which we enjoy a shared experience based on high expectations and mutual respect.
