As Rudine Sims Bishop describes,“Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. But if the light is right, the window becomes a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience.” As my classroom fills with wonderfully unique students, I want to stock my classroom library with as many mirrors as possible. Diverse books help students understand the diverse world we live in and encourages them to build connections to all humans. Please help me to arm my students with stories where their background is represented in a positive light and where their life experiences are validated. Help me to provide my students with exciting multicultural adventures that will teach, connect, encourage, inspire, and empower.
