Allowing students to personalize their learning with an interactive notebook they can solidify the connections between what they know and where they can use it in the future. My students struggle with seeing the connections and importance of math. Having them organize their notes and homework helps them to use their notes to complete their homework and study for test rather than just shove the paper into a backpack or binder they will never look at again. Interactive notebooks also assist me in teaching students how to use their notes to study. Many high school students have never learned how to use notes and examples to study for math or complete their homework. When asking questions in class I can show them where to look in their notes by referencing page numbers or highlighting and making additions to their original notes to clear up misconceptions they might have.
