My students are a hopeful bunch of bright young scholars. Even though we have 100% of students on free lunch and are one of the highest crime areas in the country, my scholars have extremely high expectations for themselves. This is the first year we will be offering A.P. History courses so we spent some time studying what makes successful classrooms. We are a 98% African American school, but are surrounded by affluent suburban areas. When my students got to visit other schools that had technology, decorated rooms, and even something as simple as binders with paper (we have a huge paper shortage) my students were very excited and told me they want our room to look like that.
