The supplies that I am requesting for my students may seem minute to some, but are major components for my students to simply be a kid. School supplies have a profound impact on the lives of my students. At the beginning of the year, school supply drives help get students started; however, by January, several of my high school students have broken straps or have misplaced their bags and have depleted their paper supply; unfortunately, the parents do not provide a replacement. Students are required to have a clear book bag on our campus, so I try to keep some handy. The simple act of having a book bag boosts the morale of my students. In addition to book bags, students come to me for personal hygiene items like deodorant, mostly the males, and sanitary items for the females. We encourage our students to take pride in their appearance and take care of their bodies. However, when they come to school needing personal items, I try to make sure I have things on hand, so they can feel comfortable in the learning environment. There are cases when student's body odor is a problem, and I assist the students by taking them in the coaches locker room so they can "freshen up". I keep wash cloths, soap, and clothing in my "Care Closet" so students can discretely take care of the situation and maintain a sense of normalcy, which is important for high school students.
