Students learn best when they can both experience seeing themselves in books and when they can see other kinds of lived experiences in books. This fosters a sense of belonging and also a sense of empathy for the lived experiences of others. Approximately 84% of all books are still written by/about white people (CCBC). Even more are about able bodied and heterosexual people. One of my goals as an educator is to help students to see beyond their own world and experiences. Help me purchase a novel set of The Stars Beneath Our Feet which is written by a Black queer author and features diverse characters including Black, queer, and autistic characters.
