Many of my seventh grade students are fighting an uphill battle in becoming lifelong readers. For example, ninety-six percent of our school's students are from low-income families, which means the extra money needed for books at home is - more often than not - out of the question. Neighboring gangs exist in the shadows of our school. This negativity is unfortunately a part of my students’ daily lives. Additionally, forty-four percent of our students are considered English Language Learners, with parents who speak no or very little English, yet another limiting factor to having access to books. However, I am inspired daily by the resilience they show in the face of these challenges.
