My students are in grades 9-12 at a rural high school. They are wholly responsible for beginning an after school Art Club which I supervise. Students are encouraged to enter national and local contests in visual arts, including 'Celebrating Art' and applying for GSA, and engaging in our Advanced Placement Visual Arts classes which give them the opportunity to earn college credits. D.C. is but a short metro trip away and less than a mile from our school is a family farm combining to create quite a unique blend of influences. Our school is growing each year and remains supportive of our Art's program and encourages growth within the department. Part of my mission has been to expand the students' ideas of the arts by introducing new materials, processes, and influences in an effort to encourage them expect more from themselves and what they can achieve if they apply a bit of creativity.
