Students perform better when they are at ease and comfortable within their learning environment. Not all students learn the same, or at the same rates. Some students require alternative instruction, placement, and/or seating in order for them to be successful both academically and socially. In order to assist with their success, I am trying to provide alternative seating for my diverse classroom of students. Many of my students prefer to sit low for comfort. A couple of my students have an unconscious need to always have some body part in motion. One student simply could not sit down in a chair for long periods of time; she preferred to stand while continuing to work quietly. I hope to create flexible seating opportunities for my students so that each child can learn productively while not being forced to adapt to one specific seat for eight hours a day. Students who need to move their body can choose to use alternative seating such as Balance Balls or Bouncy Bands, which will promote continued learning without noise or the need to be move around and distract others. On-the-floor seating will allow those students who prefer to sit on their legs to do so safely. As a teacher, I would be free to teach daily lessons without the constant distractions that come along with asking everyone to sit straight back in one chair for eight hours a day. Just as there is no single way to learn, there should not be a "one size fits all" seating arrangement for diversified learners.
