My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for another day together. We start the day by reciting our class creed, and spreading "good vibes" by sharing words of affirmation with others. I want them to know I believe in them and they can do anything, despite the obstacles they face in and out of the classroom. I teach at a Title I school on the Southside of Oklahoma City where nearly 100 percent of our students receive free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students lack the resources they need in school, due to severe budget cuts this year in Oklahoma City Public Schools. To reach their personal and academic goals, many of our students must show an equivalent of 2+ years Reading growth in a single year but lack the resources and services that meet their needs. Despite the hardships they face, my students are eager to learn and do their best in all they do.
