Our 1,107 students come from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds and many of them live in poverty, have incarcerated parents, and deal with high levels of addiction in their communities. Several of them struggle academically and many drop out. Our community has sections that are considered rural ghettos, and the children who live there are under served by both school and public libraries. As a librarian new to this school, I am developing a collection of books that is responsive to our students' lives and literacy needs. The current collection reflects middle class life with few books containing culturally and ethnically diverse characters.
